Last night I had a bit of a late night. After the kids went to bed I had some studying, them some side work, and a little office work. I started thinking about the parts I have replaced.

I’m not a mechanic (by trade anyway) so I am usually impressed by myself (and my brother-in-law who is usually there helping but wont sign up to OPPO) with what we accomplish. Up until a few weeks ago I had the old tone ring off my wife’s old Escape in my toolbox and finally decided it didn’t need to be taking up the space. Now I have the fan clutch from my Allroad. I’d love to do something with it instead of just through it away because I think its kinda cool looking. For now its hanging on the wall in my shed bit it would be cool to make something displayable out of it but i don’t know what. It would also have to pass the wife’s approval if its in view. Unfortunately I don’t have my own office or basement to do what I want with. Any suggestions? Am I the only one who has an attachment to junk parts they have taken off their car? Have any of you guys done anything with your old parts?

If there's electricity you can turn it into a fan for the shed, just stick it in a corner or something.

the fan itself is junk and cracked all over the place, the clutch was pulley driven so i don’t thing electricity will do anything.

My apartment at school has a bunch of broken parts from our FSAE car scattered around it. Not really displayed in anyway, just sitting there looking cool.

thats great decor for a college apartment. But just wait until you get married. Chances are your wife will be telling you to throw that junk away.

I have some old boat parts, like an old rudder. I just couldn’t throw out 15 pounds of bronze alloy like that, it’s too cool. So it’s under my woodstove until I find “something to do with it.” I have a bunch of other old trim pieces from old boats... same reason. I keep imagining that one day I’ll have a nice big barn and I can hang random things on the walls for no reason... until then I have too much crap in my house. Hmm.

You could probably turn it into some kind of centrifugal blower instead of a fan.

As a designer, I’m surprised you haven’t asked it what it wants to be. That’s the approach every designer I’ve ever met uses, even my wife. :)

To me, it says, “clock!”

it wants to be an astronaut, now what?

just make sure you get a house big enough to have your own space.

Beats me. I’m a problem solver, you’re the designer!

It seems that the clutch’s aspirations are a bit misplaced. It might partially realize its dream by becoming a part of a spacecraft instead of being an astronaut. Perhaps the base of a lunar lander model? Add a nozzle in the middle, flip it so the nozzle points down, add an octagon on top, then some legs and a geodesic dome on the very top. Paint it silver and gold and there you have it.

Meh, any girl desperate enough to marry me would probably put up with it.

have you done anything with them or are they taking up space? I was thinking I should tell my wife to find somewhere else to put the wine glasses so I could use the glass cabinet to display my parts. I was also thinking i should put the blowup mattress in the shed so I have a place to sleep.

HAHA!

No they’re all sitting in a box. I kept them for the same reason you stated, havent put the effort into making something out of them though.

I have a whole long block, I was thinking of making a table.

Kinja'd!!!

Like so, but I would take out the internals for weight savings, I’ll use the pistons for mounting or whatever.
